UNDERSTANDING GODLY SORROW IN REPENTANCE
“For [godly] sorrow that is in accord with the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but worldly sorrow [the hopeless sorrow of those who do not believe] produces death.”
2 Corinthians 7:10 (Amplified Bible)
WHAT IS GODLY SORROW?
How is it necessary in Salvation?
What is the connection between Godly Sorrow and Repentance?
What is the difference between Godly Sorrow and worldly sorrow?
What Paul the apostle said in 2 Corinthians 7 was a follow-up response to the Church in Corinth, after the report he received from Titus concerning the outcome of his first epistle to them.
To get into this, I want you to take another look at the concept of Repentance and also to understand the mindset of Paul the apostle.
The Concept of repentance as we have looked at from previous episodes, is essentially a change of mind.
When Jesus said to the people to “…repent…” He was basically admonishing them to have a change of mind about what they believe. Repentance is essentially turning away from the self to faith in Christ Jesus.
God’s supply of forgiveness and salvation is according to the riches of His grace and not dependent on your repentance.
Your repentance is as a result of the forgiveness which God has already supplied.
True repentance is produced by the revelation of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul the apostle understood this, he was on his way to Damascus in the business of persecuting the saints in Christ. He believed in the Jewish traditions and was zealously defending it and also attacked any believe system which was contrary to his belief. To him, “Christianity” was ungodly and should be stopped.
The teaching that Jesus is the Messiah and all must believe in Him to be saved was blasphemous, therefore anyone with such faith must be persecuted.
He was stiff-necked, uncircumcised in heart and resisted the Holy Spirit. As Stephen described the Sanhedrin (Acts 7:51).
Paul’s encounter with Jesus on his way to Damascus, changed his mind. He realized he was not working for God but against God. He had a change of heart, turned from his wicked way and turned to God.
Most people only think repentance is turning away from your wicked ways. But turning away from your wicked ways is not all that there is. When you turn away from your wicked ways what do you turn to?
That is the most important matter here.
Turning away from your wicked ways is not the complete reality of Repentance. Turning away from sin or your wicked ways does not mean you are going to live by God’s supply and according to God’s will.
You can turn from your wicked ways, to live by your own effort, which will only result in death and not God’s salvation.
Total repentance is turning to God!
Paul turned away from the Jewish legalistic system and traditions, and turned to the glorious revelation of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:5-13).

Definitely this change of mind or heart was not without regret. Considering how he contributed to the persecution and displacement of the saints,
He didn’t clap and celebrate his actions. He felt discomfort and sorrow.
But this sorrow wasn’t without hope. It was with hope and joy of what he has found in Christ Jesus.
No wonder he said,
“To truly know him meant letting go of everything from my past and throwing all my boasting on the garbage heap. It’s all like a pile of manure to me now, so that I may be enriched in the reality of knowing Jesus Christ and embrace him as Lord in all of his greatness” Philippians 3:8 (TPT)
He threw away his old belief system on the garbage heap. And turned to the revelation of Jesus.
He didn’t sit back in hopeless sorrow and regret. He set his focus on knowing the Lord Jesus. This was how he continued in bearing fruits of righteousness unto the praise and glory of God.
This explains how people show remorse or a feeling of regret for something wrong they did, but later they continue in that wrong. They truly didn’t repent. Having a feeling of remorse is not necessarily a change of mind towards God’s truth.
You may feel wrong about something you did, but still not think right. Repentance is a radical mind-shift from your old way of thinking to God’s way of thinking. Just as Paul the apostle did.
Repentance in the New Testament is not just a feeling of sorry or confession of wrong.
Repentance in the New Testament is a tangible transformation in thoughts and deeds through your surrender to the love of God.
Paul the apostle surrendered his thoughts to the loving kindness and graciousness of God.
In the New Testament, repentance is not a human or worldly feeling of regret, shame, or remorse. It is more than that. It is a conviction of heart produced by God’s goodness through the Holy Spirit.
Godly sorrow is not focused on weakness, failures, or sins. It is recognizing the wastage caused, failures, weaknesses, and then submitting to God’s gracious power and love.
Hallelujah!

Repentance goes beyond having a feeling of remorse or regret. It is having a great mind shift from yourself or a belief system to God.
Until there is a tangible transformation in thoughts and deeds, repentance has not taken place.
Until one surrender to the love of God repentance cannot take place.
Turning from your wicked ways is not all that there is about repentance; repentance is turning from your wicked ways and turning to God.
Thank you Lord
I turn to you!!

Glory to God
Repentance is essentially turning away from the self to faith in Christ Jesus. It is a radical mind shift on the goodness of God. It is not a wasteful sorrow over an error done but a remorse of the waste of time and who you are in Christ. Repentance is not only about turning from wrong, it is more about what you turn to. So asking people to stop sinning is not right, it is more about turning to the Lord.
Apostle Paul’s conversion depicts this thought well, He said all these i count as dung for the excellency of the knowledge of God that I may be found in Him not with my own righteousness but the righteousness that comes from Him.
True repentance will lead a man back to God with a humble heart to be led.
Thank you, Lord Jesus
Thank you Lord Jesus this brings me to the light of which David operated in
Where he did something wrong acknowledged it and repented by shifting his mind from the deeds and surrender all to God and his strength that made him never return to such things anymore repentance and sorrow is real when it moves you to where you don’t go back but move forward and being better
