HEARING GOD’S VOICE 22 –
PERCEIVING GOD’S VOICE 3
“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly”
Psalm 85:8 (NKJV)
Indisputably, there are many voices in this world. Even the voice of darkness has created multiple channels to reach your heart.
To rightly know or perceive the voice of God, you must also understand the voice of the flesh which speaks of self-gratification. And also the voice of the adversary which condemns, deceives and opposes the counsel of the Lord.
To differentiate between God’s voice from other voices, you must understand the character and nature of God.
God’s character and nature are the key characteristics of His voice and are embedded in His word.
Let me ask you a simple question:
How did you know the voice of your biological parents?
Whiles walking home, you suddenly hear a voice without seeing the person. With excitement you shout your favorite uncle’s name. And as you entered, truly he was the one in the house speaking to your parents.
Until you know your uncle and have spent time with him, you won’t be able to identify his voice.
To know or perceive God’s voice you must consistently fellowship with the scriptures and also commune with Him in prayer. The speaking of God in your heart is through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will only speak what God says.
– The voice of the Lord is precise and peaceful.
When God speaks to you, it is with the exactitude of His Word to your heart. There is no ambiguity in God’s voice. God communicates with clarity and all that He says crystallizes your heart.
As you can see from the opening verse:
“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints…” Psalm 85:8 (NKJV).
God is not an author of confusion but peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).
Most people claim to be “confused” not because they don’t know it is God who’s speaking to them. What they claim to be their confusion, is mainly about their willingness to respond by obedience of faith or to reject what God is saying.
The struggle is not really if what you are hearing is the voice of the Lord. The struggle is whether you should follow the voice of your desires.
What God says wouldn’t ever agree with your self-gratification.
God’s voice doesn’t affirm your carnality.
And the carnal mind is against God (Romans 8:5-8).
The beautiful thing is this, the more you act in the obedience of God’s voice, the more you gain mastery in knowing the voice of the Lord. The more you act contrary to what God is saying, the more you live in confusion or struggle to respond to His voice.
There are times when the Lord is saying and the direction He is leading you doesn’t look peaceful. But as long as it is consistent with His word, continue to trust Him. It will bring you to a prosperous and peaceful destination.
– The voice of the Lord is powerfully active and penetrates the heart.
Whenever God speaks, His word invades, penetrates and cuts deep in your heart. God’s word doesn’t massage situations, neither is it sentimental. His words are as double-edged sword which cuts the heart.
What God says is what His word says.
“For we have the living Word of God, which is full of energy, and it pierces more sharply than a two-edged sword. It will even penetrate to the very core of our being where soul and spirit, bone and marrow meet! It interprets and reveals the true thoughts and secret motives of our hearts” Hebrews 4:12 (TPT)
The disciples of Jesus affirmed that when Jesus spoke to them (on the Road to Emmaus) their hearts burned.
“Back and forth they talked. “Didn’t we feel on fire as he conversed with us on the road, as he opened up the Scriptures for us?” Luke 24:32 (Message Translation)
The speaking of God causes the heart to burn, and it exposes the deep intents of the heart and the soul.
Oh, glory to God!
