THE BREASTPLATE OF FAITH AND LOVE –
THE BELIEVER’S THREEFOLD CORD ARMOR 2
“But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.”
1 Thessalonians 5:8 (KJV)
Paul the apostle, mentioned three spiritual verities but just two armor.
Faith and love function as breastplate for the believer, as they walk in the light. Whiles the hope of salvation achieves the same result for the believer as helmet does for a good soldier.
Remember, as believers we are in combat against the deceptive schemes of the adversary. The adversary’s deception gets more intense as the coming of the Lord is near.
The coming of the Lord is inevitable, and His coming is to be a glorious news for every believer.
We fight from the place of victory enforcing what the Lord has accomplished for us.
To have clear purpose of the armour as mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 5, take note of Paul’s statement:
“For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” 1 Thessalonians 5:7-9 (KJV)
He admonished that we put on the armour for God has not appointed us to wrath. These armor brings you into the certainty of heart that God didn’t bring you into salvation and then later turn to condemn you.
The deception of the adversary is to make you doubt your salvation and relationship with the Lord so that you will live in fear and doubt.
The breastplate of love and faith protects your heart from fear, anxiety and sorrow.
The heart here is not essentially the physcial organ which pumps blood. The heart consist of the innermost or core part of your being.
Jesus calls the heart a field (Luke 8:15). Whatever God wants to produce in your life must first be planted in your heart. Your innermost being is the place where your entire being is nurtured. The Newness of life in Christ germinates from your heart.
“Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 (GOD’S WORD® Translation)
You cannot use a physcial metal as was used in the medieval times to guard your innermost (heart). Neither can a modern day military vest save your heart from the deceptive projectiles of the adversary.
It will take a spiritual virtue to preserve the heart of the believer.
It’s called the breastplate of faith and love. In Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, he mentioned, the breastplate of righteousness. The breastplate of righteousness is not different from the breastplate of faith and love. They are the same. You received righteousness through the demonstration of God’s love and supply of faith in your heart.
You are made righteous by faith in Christ Jesus (Romans 3:22). And the righteousness of God in Christ which we have received is a demonstration of God’s love towards us.
You must have the persuasion that God has fully made you righteous in Christ.
And this persuasion or consciousness gives you the assurance that you shall not come under any wrath at the coming of the Lord.
