Just in case you cannot spontaneously remember the right words of praise to speak, go through the scriptures and write out the thanksgiving verses which resonate with your heart. (You can find a lot through the Psalms).

And then read them out or vocalize them with a genuine heart of gratitude.

While you are engaged in this, the anointing of the Holy Spirit will begin to increase in your life.

    3. Give a gift or money to support the Lord’s work.

    Reread the opening verse:

“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” 1 Chronicles 16:29 (KJV)

This offering is different from the fruit of your lips. This is the fruit of your heart.

    Our Lord Jesus said,
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” (Matthew 6:21).

Your money is your treasure. To give your money sacrificially to the Lord’s work is great evidence that you value the Lord.

How you spend your money reveals your priorities. And your money is a symbol of your desire. Therefore, to say you are greatly thankful to God, you must follow it up with a financial gift towards His work.

This is a sacrificial giving of gratitude to the Lord.

It is a demonstration of honor.

The scripture says, “Honor the Lord with your substance” (Proverbs 3:9).

This month give a sacrificial gift to the Lord’s work.

GO AHEAD TO PRACTICE YOUR GRATITUDE TOWARDS THE LORD.

    You remain a blessing!

It is great to have a personal experience of Christ. Nevertheless, this experience must be grounded on sound doctrine.

No one becomes born again, and automatically, has sound doctrine without being part of the community of Christ, where the word of God (goodnews) is rightly divided.

In the book of Acts, after Peter and the apostles had preached, all those who got saved were added to the Church.

For which purpose, they were to be taught the true revelation of Jesus (goodnews) and be built in the new and living way.

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Acts 2:41-42 (NKJV).

What is the apostles’ doctrine (teaching)?

The focus of the message or teachings of the apostles was the revelation of Jesus and the expression of His life.

You don’t understand the scriptures alone.

As you have personal study, you also submit yourself to be taught in a Christ-centred church community.

This is how you begin to grow in the knowledge of Christ.

So we are charged through the scriptures, esteem them who labour in teaching you the word (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

    HEARING GOD’S VOICE 26 –

THE VOICE OF GOD Versus YOUR IMAGINATION 3

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly”

    Psalm 85:8 (NKJV)

From the point I have made through this discussion, you will understand that a person’s imagination can be a channel or conduit of the Voice of God or it can also be a limitation of the voice of the Lord.

When a person is born again, submits his mind to the training of the word of God, and is continuously renewed in the mind, his imagination becomes consistent with God’s thoughts.

When your imagination is fully influenced and developed by the word of God, it can perfectly transmit divine thoughts.

Such a mind does not reject the thoughts of God but rather rejects the thoughts of deception.

“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Ephesians 4:22-23 (NLT)

The more you spend time daily to have intimate communion with the Lord, your mind is cultured and programmed to acknowledge the rhythm of God’s speaking. Within the frame of your imagination, you are able to determine which frequency of thoughts or portraits of ideas are of God and the ones that are not of God, because of the richness of the Word of God in you.

The point basically is this, God speaks to you through several proven mediums, but primarily through His word. One of these other proven mediums is your shaped mind, which is your imagination.

When your mind is renewed you can rightly discern the voice of the flesh from the voice of the Lord through your imagination.

The voice of the flesh is the communication of your selfish desires or physical feelings. The voice of the flesh makes you do what pleases or fulfill your gratification.

Your wrong actions come from the imagination of your heart.

God doesn’t put any wrong desire in a person’s heart.

“Don’t let anyone under pressure to give in to evil say, “God is trying to trip me up.” God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one’s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer.” James 1:13-15 (Message Bible).

Through your thoughts, you conceive evil desires before it manifests as sin.

Read the verse in the Easy English Bible:

“It is our own thoughts that make us do bad things. When we want to do something wrong, our thoughts lead us in a bad way. We may agree to do what our bad thoughts tell us to do. When we do that, it becomes a sin. Then, we may not stop doing those bad things. If we continue to live like that, the result of our sins is death” James 1:14-15.

Now when your mind is renewed such thoughts can be pulled down by the revelation of the word of God.

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)

The word for imagination in Greek is, “logismos” which means the computation of reason or a conceit. Any reasoning of the mind which is not consistent with the knowledge of God must be cast down or pulled down. This is not done gently but violently. The Greek word is “katheireō”, which means to demolish something violently.

Your imagination must be the pathway for God’s thoughts and communication. Don’t give room for any wrong imagery to have a pass in your imagination. You have to crush those thoughts before they take root.

Let your imagination mirror inspirations transmitted to your heart through the speaking of the Holy Spirit in your heart, and the communication of the Word of God.

This is a beautiful thing about your renewed mind through the Word:

You are transformed into the image of God in Christ and you are able to discern the perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2)

    HEARING GOD’S VOICE 19 –

How Do I Hear God’s Voice? 14 — MORE ON VISIONS, DREAMS AND TRANCES 5

“And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

    Numbers 12:6-8 (ESV)

Through the experiences of dreams, visions and trances God communicates and instructs believers.

Yet, every speaking of God through these experiences are judged and interpreted according to the revelation of the scriptures.

From yesterday’s episode, I shared the experiences of Cornelius the Italian Centurion and Peter the apostle as examples to help distinct the difference between a vision and a trance.

Whiles a vision is the capturing of an image or event or a phenomenon in the spirit realm by means of spiritual sight and hearing; a trance is a state where a person’s innerman is caught up or captivated into a different realm beyond the optics. To experience a trance is to transit from one realm into a different dimension, whiles you remain in your physical location.

Paul the apostle had such experiences.

One of his experiences was mentioned in the second epistle to the Corinthians:

“This boasting will do no good, but I must go on. I will reluctantly tell about visions and revelations from the Lord. I was caught up to the third heaven fourteen years ago. Whether I was in my body or out of my body, I don’t know—only God knows. Yes, only God knows whether I was in my body or outside my body. But I do know that I was caught up to paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words, things no human is allowed to tell.” 2 Corinthians 12:1-4 (NLT)

These experiences do still happen to believers. Nonetheless there is the wisdom of God through the scriptures, established to govern such experiences.

From Paul the Apostle’s experience we realize that, it is not all visions that ought to be uttered. God sometimes brings a believer into certain transcendent experience to affirm a reality in his heart.

The apostle Peter’s experience unveiled some few items on this matter.

“The next day around noon, as Cornelius’ men were approaching Joppa, Peter went up to the flat roof of the house to pray. He was hungry and wanted to eat, but while lunch was being prepared he fell into a trance and entered into another realm. As the heavenly realm opened up, he saw something resembling a large linen tablecloth that descended from above, being let down to the earth by its four corners. As it floated down he saw that it held many kinds of four-footed animals, reptiles, and wild birds. A voice said to him, “Peter, go and prepare them to be eaten.” Peter replied, “There’s no way I could do that, Lord, for I’ve never eaten anything forbidden or impure according to our Jewish laws.” The voice spoke again. “Nothing is unclean if God declares it to be clean.” The vision was repeated three times. Then suddenly the linen sheet was snatched back up into heaven. Peter was so stunned by the vision that he couldn’t stop wondering about what all it meant. Meanwhile, Cornelius’ men had learned where Peter was staying and at that same moment were standing outside the gate. They called out to those in the house, “Is this where Simon, the Rock, is staying?” As Peter was in deep thought, trying to interpret the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Go downstairs now, for three men are looking for you. Don’t hesitate to go with them, because I have sent them.” Acts 10:9-20 (TPT)

    Few things to note:

⇒ A rich consistent prayer habit creates the atmosphere which aids you to be launched into such captivation. A person of prayer is a person who activates and enlivens the intimacy we have obtained through Christ. The place of prayer is a place of visions and spectacular prophetic experiences. Whenever you pray or delve into the word of God, your spirit ascends to see far beyond the optics.

⇒ A trance is an experience that helps you see beyond the norm. A trance is not necessarily a vision. However you are able to capture or see a vision whiles in a trance. The vision is the message delivered to you by the Lord.

The visions of God are not delivered with unrelated elements. The elements of every vision are things you can easily relate with. Peter’s state of hunger and expectation for food, became the medium the Lord used to communicate His message to him in the vision.

⇒ The visions of God are stunning and transcending and leaves you with a burden and desire for interpretation.

⇒ Divine visions cannot be interpreted by human efforts. They are interpreted through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the insight of the Word of God in your heart.

Whether there is a vision or not, we have God’s greatest revelation given to us through His Word.

    I call you blessed!

    HEARING GOD’S VOICE 7 –

    How Do I Hear God’s Voice? 2

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly”

    Psalm 85:8 (NKJV)

As part of answering these questions:

    1. Is there really a voice of God or it’s a mere human hypothesis?

    2. Does God speak to all men (the good people and the evil people, believers and unbelievers)?

    3. Why does God speak to men? What is the drive or intention of His speaking?

    4. Does God still speak to christians/believers apart from the canonized Bible?

I have also answered these questions in yesterday’s episode:

    5. What is the texture of the Voice of God?

    6. Which mediums does God use to speak to His people? Or How does God speak to men?

I answered those questions whiles addressing the issue of how one can hear the Voice of God.

    Jesus said:

“My sheep hear my voice…and they follow me” (John 10:27)

Now if you even think He was only referring to the disciples He had at that time He was speaking, then check this one He also said:

“And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd” John 10:16 (NKJV)

This is similar to what He said in His prayer for His disciples in John 17:20.

“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word” (NKJV)

Jesus prayed for all believers in the above verse.

The same way Jesus refers to all believers as His sheep, and we will all hear His voice.

Which means Jesus doesn’t think any believer of His sheepfold will not be able to hear His voice.

One interesting thing Jesus said about the good shepherd was this:

“And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice” John 17:4 (NKJV).

This verse exposes the difference between how a believer and an unbeliever receive God’s speaking.

When God speaks to an unbeliever he may not immediately know it’s the voice of the Lord because he doesn’t know the Lord.

An example was Paul’s conversion experience.
When the Lord called his name, he knew it was a Supernatural voice, but didn’t know who exactly it was. So he asked: “Who are you Lord?” (Acts 9:5).

When a believer hears the voice of the Lord, he must know without doubt that it is the Lord speaking. As long as you are born again, you have what it takes to hear the voice of the Lord and follow His leading.

Any believer who argues in his heart whether a voice he is hearing is the voice of the Lord or not, doesn’t fully have the revelation of the word of God abounding in His heart.

Jesus is God’s complete revelation of God. He is God’s speaking to all men. To know God’s voice you must have the revelation of Jesus. You cannot have the revelation of Jesus without the knowledge of the scriptures. The scriptures testify of Him (John 5:39).

Jesus said to the Jews, they do not believe Him even though the Father has testified of Him. And it is because they have neither heard the Father’s voice, nor seen His form (John 5:37) and they ultimately don’t believe because they don’t have the word of the Father in them (John 5:38).

Which means if they should have had the word of the Father in them, they would have known how the scriptures testify of Him as the Christ.

The accurate revelational-knowledge of the Word of God will help you know the true texture of God’s voice.

Until you train your heart and mind to know God through the scriptures you will wrongly perceive the voice of the Lord.

Before His ascension, the Lord Jesus told the believers about the coming of the Holy Spirit to them as another comforter. The Lord was clear that the Holy Spirit will not say anything which will contradict His word (or the revelation of Him).

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” John 16:13-14 (KJV)

As I have said before in this series, God may speak to you through dreams, visions, angelic encounters, but THE WORD OF GOD is GOD’S PRIMARY means of speaking to you now.

    You may ask, “how about the Holy Spirit?”;

God speaks to you by the Holy Spirit as a witness of what He has said to you through His Word. As to touching divine communication:

    1. The Holy Spirit leads or guides you through the Word of God (the Bible, which is the aggregation of the revelation of Jesus). And as He guides you, He helps you to receive illumination or understanding of the Word.
You see, when you pray to the LORD to enlighten the eyes of your understanding, The Holy Spirit opens your heart and mind that you may be able to see the treasures of truth in the scriptures.

    2. When the Holy Spirit leads you through the Word, and helps you glean the truth of the Word, He speaks to you from the bank of the scriptures in your heart. The essence of anything the Holy Spirit will say to you is drawn from the wells of the scriptures in your heart.

You cannot miss out on the voice of the Lord when you are full of the word of God.

You cannot be confused about angelic encounters, the dreams you have and the visions you see when your heart is illuminated with the scriptures. As we may discuss in other episodes, the devil also can put words in your heart; to look as though it is the word of God. But you must know this precious one, there is no truth in and of the devil. He is the father of lies and deception.

There are people who thought they encountered an angel of God but instead they encountered an agent of the devil. These people begin to operate by the things they heard from this evil or demonic spirit and assume they are operating by some new and superior revelation of Jesus or of God.

Paul asked “who are you Lord?”, when he heard the voice. And he did not go ahead to just teach any other revelation apart from what was consistent with the scriptures. He did not prove his teaching of the gospel by just his experiences and encounters but with the scriptures.

No matter what you hear from the Lord or how you hear the voice of the Lord, it must be consistent with the accurate revelation of the scriptures.

Don’t crave for a voice beyond or above the revelation of His Word.

    HEARING GOD’S VOICE 6 –

    How Do I Hear God’s Voice? 1

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly”

    Psalm 85:8 (NKJV)

Through this new devotional series on this Machaira with Apostle Bennie platform, I have answered a number of questions such as:

Now we move on to address the most asked question:

How do I hear the Voice of God?

Knowing how to hear the voice of God will help you follow the direction of the Lord, in this noisy pluralistic–postmodern world.

To fully know how to hear God’s voice, you must understand how God speaks.
When you know and understand how God speaks you won’t have doubts when you hear Him speak to you. When you also know how God speaks you will know the voice of God when you hear His speaking.

Before the revelation of Jesus, God spoke in different ways or mediums to His people and even to all men.

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son…” Hebrews 1:1-2 (KJV)

From yesterday’s episode, I explained how everything God says to you now must be consistent with the scriptures (the Bible, which is the Word of God).

Before Christ was revealed, God spoke to the Fathers mainly through the Prophets. And these Prophets and some of the fathers also received a message from the Lord through:

    1. His creation.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.” Psalms 19:1-2 (KJV) See also: Romans 1:18-20.

    2. Dreams and Visions
    (1 Kings 3:5; Matthew 2:13; Genesis 15:1; Acts 9:10; Acts 10:1-6)

    3. Angels
    ( Luke 1:19; 26-38)

The scriptures reveal that God also spoke audibly or in a loud voice. Such speaking was described as the sound of thunder (Job 37:4-5; ), a trumpet (Revelation 4:1) or even a noise of many waters (Ezekiel 43:2).

During Paul’s conversion, the people that were with him heard only a sound but Paul heard the Lord’s voice (Acts 9:4,7).

The Lord also spoke in a still small voice.

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:11-13 (NKJV)

Though God still communicates or speaks through His angels, created things, dreams, and visions in these times, He ultimately speaks through His word.

Some people are in search of an angelic encounter, a trance or a mystical prophetic vision before they know the Lord is talking to them. Some look out for signs before they respond to the instructions of the Lord just as Gideon did (Judges 6:33-40).

God’s present Word to man is the revelation of Jesus.

It doesn’t matter the angelic encounter you have or the vision you receive, if the encounter or vision doesn’t give a message consistent with the gospel or revelation of Jesus, then it is not from God.

“Anyone who comes to you with a different message than the grace gospel that you have received will have the curse of God come upon them! For even if we or an angel appeared before you, to give you a different gospel than what we have already proclaimed, God’s curse will be upon them.” Galatians 1:8 (TPT)

This then means that the Word of God (which is the revelation of Jesus) is the texture of the Voice (or speaking or any communication) of God.

    Selah.
