DEAD TO SIN
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Romans 6:1 (NKJV)
The question in the opening verse, is one of the most asked questions concerning the gospel of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Most people ask this question because they doubt the power of the gospel.
Some also ask such questions because they think people will take advantage of the goodness of the gospel to sin.
This is it, anyone who decides to use the liberty of the gospel as an occasion to sin did not truly hear the gospel neither did such person receive the love of Christ.
The gospel of our Lord Jesus is the revelation of the love of God.
Sin is influenced by selfishness.
Sin is anything that is not of faith.
“But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.” Romans 14:23 (NKJV)
And faith works in love.
“For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.” Galatians 5:6 (NLT).
Nowhere did the gospel suggest that we shall continue to sin because of the grace of God.
We see Paul the apostle, instructing the brethren in Galatia not to use their liberty to do whatever they want.
Look at it:
” It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows.” Galatians 5:13 (MSG)
I hope you got the message clear?
In Paul’s epistle to the Romans, he took his time to explain the glorious work of the grace of God in us. He revealed how the grace of our Lord Jesus, is superior to the law of sin and death. (Romans 5).
After establishing this reality of grace, he made a rhetoric statement:
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1)
From verses 2 – 4 of Romans 6, He provided a clear answer with no ambiguity.
Certainly not! (verse 1)
The apostle Paul, didn’t end there, he explained further by asking more rhetoric questions:
How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? (verse 2)
Do you get it?
Okay, just relax he makes it more clearer:
” Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-4).
This is amazing.
You don’t continue to sin, not because of the rules and regulations you disobey.
Neither do you refuse to continue in sin because of the rules and regulations you obey.
You don’t continue in sin because YOU ARE DEAD TO SIN.
When Jesus died, He died as the lamb of God for the whole world. Therefore as many that accept Jesus as the lamb of God (who died for them) and believe in Him; they become partakers of His death through the baptism of the spirit.
” For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit” 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NKJV)
So then, when you came into Christ, your testimony wasn’t only that Jesus died for you.
Your testimony now is, you died with Christ.
Now because you died with Christ (who became sin), you are DEAD TO SIN.
“Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:11 (NKJV).
Instead of asking, “shall I continue in sin that grace may abound?”
Or telling yourself, “I will continue in sin because grace may abound.”
Say to yourself:
I CAN’T CONTINUE IN SIN BECAUSE I AM DEAD TO SIN AND ALIVE TO GOD IN CHRIST JESUS.
Hallelujah!
