How Do I Hear God’s Voice? 7 — Means and Moments

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly”

The essence of God’s speaking to you is for you to know Him. God speaks to you to commune with you, not to give you mechanical commandments.

He wants you to share in His life.

If you are reading and following this discussion, it means you sincerely want to master the wisdom of hearing God’s voice.

However, most people are interested in hearing God’s voice just to know what to do and where to go. They are not really interested in knowing and mastering “how to hear God’s voice”, mainly to know the person of God.

Don’t just look forward to hearing God’s voice only for direction and answers. Hear God’s voice to know Him intimately.

This really is the greatest secret to having mastery in knowing and hearing God’s voice.

When you have an intimate relationship with a person, you get to know his voice so well that you can tell when he is speaking even amid a noise. Even when your eyes are tied and you hear him speak you will be able to tell who is speaking.

In our present age, it’s easy to understand this phenomenon. When an unknown number calls you and you hear the person behind the call speak, you will easily tell if it’s a friend you know or not. When you are not able to really confirm the voice then you don’t often communicate with that voice on the phone.

The consistent communion with God helps you develop mastery in knowing His voice.

Though you must hear God’s voice with the goal of knowing His person, you will definitely receive His direction. There are times when people run to fortune tellers and spiritualists for direction. However, they only lead them to a dead-end. The sure and tested means to receive divine direction is the scriptures.

“When people tell you, “Try out the fortunetellers. Consult the spiritualists. Why not tap into the spirit-world, get in touch with the dead?” Tell them, “No, we’re going to study the Scriptures.” People who try the other ways get nowhere – a dead end!” Isaiah 8:19-20 (Message Translation)

When you take heed to the instructions of the Word of God, you will not miss your way.

The Bible (or the Word of God) will help you to know the voice of God. As I mentioned in previous episodes, the Word of God helps you to know the texture of God’s voice.

Now, as we have clearly established from this series, the Bible is God’s primary means of speaking to you.

Does it negate the concept that there are other means by which God speaks?

Not at all!

Let me reiterate this to you:

There are other means by which God speaks to men, but every speaking must be consistent with the revelation of His Word. Even the means by which people claim God speaks to men must also be consistent with the scriptures.

There are certain means to which people think God uses to speak to men, but they are not true.

God doesn’t use fortune tellers to speak to you. God doesn’t use demonic spirits to speak to you or to give you direction. Anything of the devil will lead you into falsehood. There is no truth in the devil and his cohorts, as he is the father of lies or deception.

1. Apart from God speaking to you directly through the scriptures, God speaks to you in a Direct Voice or Words.

This can happen as an audible voice (in some instances) and as a whisper or still small voice (in most instances). Sometimes it’s like you are hearing a voice in your head communicating with peace and light.

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21 (ESV)

Mostly the texture of this voice will be like the scriptures in your heart.
