PORTRAIT OF GRACE 3
“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”
John 1:17 (ESV)
The gospel of Grace was not preached after Jesus ascended.
Some assume that Jesus did not preach the Gospel of Grace, but preached the Kingdom of God. They claim it was Paul who preached the gospel of Grace.
This claim is an issue of misunderstanding.
The Grace of God is the life-essence of God which flows through His Kingdom.
The Grace of God is the disposition and economy (arrangement of the things) of the Kingdom of God.
Fundamentally, there is no distinction between the Gospel of Grace and the Gospel of the Kingdom. The Gospel of Grace is the reality of the Kingdom.
Jesus in His earth walk lived and presented the gospel of Grace through His teachings and His deeds.
“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:17 (NKJV).
This verse reveals the life mission and the living of Jesus.
The law of Moses was different; it demanded, exposed the weaknesses of man and condemned man. The law made it obvious that all men need the Grace of God to receive righteousness.
Salvation to all men did not come by the law of Moses; Salvation came by the appearance of the Grace of God (Titus 2:11).
“Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” Acts 15:10-11 (NKJV)
Jesus demonstrated this when the Pharisees brought an adulterous lady to Him.
“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
“No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.” John 8:4-11 (NLT).
There are a few things to learn from this verse concerning Jesus, who is the Person and Portrait of the Grace of God.
1. Unlike the law of Moses which condemns, the Grace of God (Jesus) doesn’t condemn.
2. The law of Moses condemns and punishes you. The grace of God (Jesus) forgives.
3. The accusers themselves who think they uphold the law cannot live by the law nor bear its yoke. Grace (Jesus) helps you and brings you into rest.
4. The accusers used the law as a yoke to oppress and to put the sinner to death. However, Grace (Jesus) doesn’t only forgive, Grace also defends, preserves, and supplies you with fresh hope, life and the ability to sin no more.
This is the true portrait of the Grace of God and the life of the Kingdom. This is the perfect picture or expression of God.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (1 Corinthians 16:23)
