BE IMMERSED IN THE SPIRIT 2
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Matthew 3:11 (NKJV)
To be BAPTIZED is from the Greek word, “baptizo” which means to be immersed or dipped into.
Most people are familiar with water baptism. So whenever they hear of baptism, they think of being dipped into water. Others argue that unless you are baptized into water you are not saved.
So what happens to the young lady who believed and received Jesus on a sick bed and “died” the following day?
Is that person saved or not?
John 3:16 does not demand water baptism. And the scriptures are clear, whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Read Romans 10).
Being baptized into water is not what leads one to salvation. Water baptism is an ordinance which is just the outward declaration of your new birth experience.
When you believed and received Jesus, you were baptized into Christ’s body.
“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…” 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NKJV).
This means that when you got born again, you were baptized into the body of Christ.
There is a further explanation here in Romans 6, where the Apostle Paul, gives a detailed explanation of what happened in baptism :
“Or are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways].” Romans 6:3-4 (Amplified Bible)
At new birth, you were immersed into Christ. The significance of this immersion is that, when you became born again, your testimony is not only that Jesus died for you. His death wasn’t just a substitutionary sacrifice. Your testimony is that, when Jesus died you died with Him, you were buried with Him and now you share in His newness of life. This is the matter of identification.
You were completely immersed into Him to live like Him. This means the old you died and now it is the new you that lives. This new you that lives is Christ (Read Galatians 2:20)
All of these became our experience by the Spirit of the Lord.
The newness of life which we have is not an isolated life. It is an organic life which is constituted in the Body of Christ by the Spirit of Christ.
To be immersed in the Spirit can be seen in these folds:
1. It is to be baptized or immersed into Christ. This immersion is into Christ’s body (which is also the Church) and extensively immersed into His Kingdom.
2. It is also to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Now these two points I have given above don’t necessarily happen one after the other. They happen simultaneously. The day you were baptized into the body, you were also baptized with the Spirit. Which is the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
3. The third point is not a one-time experience but a continuous experience. This is the CONTINOUS INFILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
As mentioned in Ephesians 5:18;
“Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him.”
Understand that, to be filled with the Holy Spirit here, means to be overflowed, soaked and saturated with the Spirit.
Though everyone in Christ has the Holy Spirit, the degree to which you express or manifest the power of the Spirit is according to the degree by which you are immersed and soaked daily in and with the Spirit.
This doesn’t suggest that one who is born again, maybe in the Spirit or not.
This is it, at new birth you were born of the Spirit (John 3:6) into the Spirit. Which means you are in the Spirit as you are in Christ.
However, since you are in the Spirit continue to be immersed and soaked with the Spirit.
Let the life in the Spirit soak and saturate your heart and mind.
Immerse your thoughts, desires and actions in the Spirit.
Hallelujah!
Shalom
DIG DEEPER
(Matthew 3:11-12; Acts 1:4-5; Colossians 3:1-4; Ephesians 5:18-19)
