THE CENTRICITY OF THE SCRIPTURES

“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” John 5:39 (NKJV)

We have looked at the necessity of being enriched by the Word of Christ.

I have emphasized how we are to make the gospel of our Lord Jesus the focus of our thoughts.

Now, this doesn’t suggest that we only read the New Testament portion of the Bible.

The entire books of the Bible are scriptures given us for our inward growth.

The Scriptures are the sacred or holy writ of God, documented to bring us into fellowship with the deep thoughts of God.

The Bible is the Word of God, designed to make you wise.

All scriptures are the outbreathings of God, for our inward breathings.

“Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16 (BLB)

All the books of the Bible are scriptures.

Let me establish this:

The apostles referred to the books in the Old Testament portion of the Bible (the books of the Prophets, the Laws, the Psalms, the Historical books and the Poetic books) as Scriptures. They mostly made references to these scriptures in their teachings and in the epistles. You will find these in the Gospels, the Epistles, and the Acts of the Apostles.

” For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NKJV).

Now, the above verse explains how they saw the scriptures (Old Testament portion of the Bible).

The entire New Testament, including the manifestation of Christ, were rooted in the Old Testament portion of the Bible.

Some argue that the books in the New Testament portion of the Bible are not scriptures.

But the apostles didn’t see it that way. Their writings were seen as scriptures as well and also as commands of God.

“And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction” 2 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV)

Peter refers to the epistles of Paul as one of the other scriptures.

See what Paul the apostle has to say:

” If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 14:37 (KJV)

There you have it!

This is how the brethren received the messages of the apostles:

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, *when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (KJV)

From these scriptures, acknowledge that, the entire books of the Bible, (starting from Genesis to Revelation), are inspired by God.

What then is the focus of the scriptures?

The central theme of the scriptures (from Genesis to Malachi) is Christ. These Scriptures are testimonies of His Person, His Gospel Plan, Kingdom Purpose and the Pursuit of His Economy of Grace.

He is the centricity of the Scriptures. Every event, festival, instruction, life of any individual, precept and ordinance testify of Christ.

” You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; *and these are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39 (NKJV)

When you patiently study the scriptures and don’t find Christ; His Purpose, Plans and Economy of Grace as the central theme, then you didn’t study with the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will bring to your heart, the Knowledge of Christ as you study the scriptures.

He is craftily concealed in the books of Moses, the Psalms, the Prophets and the other historical books. When you behold His knowledge, the scriptures will come to life.

Later that Sunday when Jesus resurrected, two of His disciples were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a journey of about seventeen miles (which could be about 6 hours walk). And whiles having a deep discussion about the events of the last few days, Jesus joined them in their walk to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-15)

” Then he carefully unveiled to them the revelation of himself throughout the Scripture. He started from the beginning and explained the writings of Moses and all the prophets, showing how they wrote of him and revealed the truth about himself.” Luke 24:27 (TPT)

After their eyes opened, look at what they said:

” Stunned, they looked at each other and said, “Why didn’t we recognize it was him? Didn’t our hearts burn with the flames of holy passion while we walked beside him? He unveiled for us such profound revelation from the Scriptures!” Luke 24:32 (TPT)

Oh glory to God.

When you come to the revelation of the Scriptures, your heart will burn with holy passion and flames.

A veil is taken off from the scriptures anytime Christ is revealed.

As you study the scriptures, even the Old Testament portion of the Bible, desire to meet Christ. See the Holy writings from the perspective of Jesus and not by your head knowledge.

The heart of the scriptures is Christ.

Selah!
DIG DEEPER:
(2 Peter 1:20-21; John 20:31; John 1:45; Luke 24:44; Matthew 1:22)

WE PRAY
That as we study and read the scriptures everyday, we shall behold the revelation of our Lord Jesus, who is the heart of God.
