LIVE IN REMEMBRANCE OF THESE
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits”
Psalm 103:2 (KJV)
This Psalm of David is a rich and interesting Psalm. It unveils one crucial thing you should do daily as a believer in Christ: remembering and exhorting yourself with the things which the LORD has done.
Whilst Job was afflicted by the adversary to curse God, David was speaking to himself to BLESS THE LORD.
David didn’t live his entire life without challenges. He had victories in all his battles. However, he failed in moral battles; experienced betrayals; he was always on the run in his youth.
Some years into David’s reign, his own son Absalom conspired and rose against him. His life was always threatened and attacked.
From being a wanted hero or soon-to-be king on the run, he later became the wanted king.
Yet in his reflective moments, he exhorts himself to BLESS THE LORD and not FORGET HIS BENEFITS.
He didn’t invest time in recounting defeats.
Firstly, you must learn to exhort or speak right to yourself. And just in case you may be wondering what to speak to yourself about, get into Psalm 103.
And this devotional, Machaira with Apostle Bennie, is here to bring you into the understanding of the word. Every episode draws your attention to the rich realities you have in God through Christ.
As you seem to be overwhelmed by challenges, failures and pains, you are likely to forget the glorious things the Lord has done. There are believers who don’t even recall anything good from God when they look into their lives.
They even live with a conclusive mindset that God is the source or cause of their sufferings. The adversary takes delight in this.
He wants you to think and accept that God doesn’t want anything good for your life. That is how he attacks the faith of the believer.
Meanwhile these are God’s own words to you:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)
In your most reflective moments what do you set your heart on?
Do you spend time thinking about the mistakes you’ve made, your failures, disappointments and defeats?
Beloved, in all your reflective moments, BLESS THE LORD!
You have to intentionally talk to yourself to BLESS THE LORD. You have to saturate your mind, will and emotions with the reality of who God is and all that He has done.
David didn’t only speak to himself to BLESS the Lord, he also conscientised his heart of the things he has to set on his mind.
To exhort his soul not to forget the benefits of the Lord shows David’s intentionality.
The biggest challenge and limitation in your faith walk is forgetfulness of the Lord’s benefits.
Until you begin to walk in the remembrance of the Lord’s benefits, you will be robbed by the adversary.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:”
In this Psalm of David, he went on to articulate the specific benefits he must not forget.
He kept his heart in the remembrance of all that the Lord has done.
And penned them for us to have such remembrance. This was why the second verse ended with a colon (:). He further listed the benefits:
No matter the happenings around you, REMEMBER that the LORD:
• forgives all your iniquities,
• heals all your diseases,
• redeems your life from destruction,
• crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
• satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
• executes righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. (See verses 3–6)
This means you are not to accept in your heart that the Lord is angry with you and does not forgive you.
In verse 8, he painted a picture of God’s person: “the Lord is MERCIFUL and GRACIOUS, Slow to anger, and ABOUNDING IN MERCY.”
This is the consciousness you must have about God.
Don’t allow your heart to forget who He is and all His benefits.
The more you walk in the remembrance of these things, the more your heart will be delighted in blessings instead of murmuring.
Selah.
