THE CALMNESS OF THE LORD’S COMING
“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.”
1 Thessalonians 5:4 (KJV)
Within certain circles, the coming of the Lord is seen as a day of doom and sudden destruction upon all men.
Most people read the first few verses of 1 Thessalonians 5, and jump into quick conclusions without the patience of understanding the crust of Paul’s message.
The first epistle of Paul the apostle to the Thessalonians was mainly written to encourage, establish, instruct and to inspire hope in the heart of the saints.
It wasn’t an epistle that had any determination to communicate doom and destruction.
A proper look at the verses 2 and 3 (within the context of the chapter) will help you understand what those words meant. While you read the verse 3, take note of the pronoun “they”.
“For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 (KJV)
To help you understand, “they” is the third-person plural subject pronoun. It is used in the subject position to refer to a group of two or more people or things.
When Paul the apostle wrote that, “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape“
The pronoun used clearly indicated that he wasn’t referring to the saints. He was talking about the unbelieving ones. Their peace and safety are in themselves or their self-efforts and the systems they have created. Meanwhile, true and perfect peace is only found in Christ. Any seemingly peace outside Christ is no peace at all. It is only in Christ we enjoy living hope.
This also means that the day of the Lord will surely come as a thief to those not of the faith. The day of the Lord shall not come to those who are of faith as a thief.
Paul the apostle was clear on this, read the verse 4-5:
“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.” 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 (KJV)
Jesus is truly coming again, and to those who are in darkness they shall be overtaken unexpectedly, as a thief.
However, to the believer in Christ, it’s going to be peaceful. It’s going to be the full realization of our hope, which is Christ.
When you got born again in Christ, you were translated by God from the power of darkness to the Kingdom of His dear Son. It was a translation from the influence of darkness into the domain of light. When you came into light, you were illuminated and also became a light being.
“But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself.” Ephesians 5:13 (Berean Standard Bible)
As you are of the light, the thoughts of the coming of the Lord must not create chaos and fear in your heart.
It must be a glorious moment, you look up to see. Your heart must be calm and comforted on this matter.

I am in the same state as Jesus is for my inner man is flooded with light so how can his coming be a surprise to me. We are expectant of his coming because his word has made us aware
they who don’t know his word are they that will take them by Suprise because the light of his word has not informed and prepared them so they will be like an unexpected event to that will be so overwhelming but to us That are in his light it will be the greatest Joy of our life because one who is like us has come but to the unbelievers it will be a strangers scene to them unless they are told they would not understand what ever happening
We snatch them from hell now.

My heart is comforted when I hear about the coming of my Lord Jesus Christ. I have always thought Jesus was coming as a thief in the night and light the story of the wise and foolish virgins, I need to have more oil.
I had wrong perception about the coming of the Lord but the verse 2 to 5 in 1 Thessalonians 5 bridges the gap because I thought of God so loved me and sent Jesus and saved me to bring me into His kingdom, even to make me a joint heir with Him, why is He coming to me at the time where he can find me sleeping so that He will leave me. I knew there was a problem with my mindset, but I couldn’t explain. The story of the virgins I juxtaposed with it made the fear worse.
But today’s Machaira makes me understand as the scriptures have taught that it is the unbeliever that Jesus will come to as a thief in the night because He never accepted the salvation Jesus gave. Other relating verses used the story of Noah and the floor, they didnt know, the floor was coming as thief in the night but it did and they all died.
Awesome.
