NAVIGATING FAITH DURING ELECTION 2
“Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.”
Deuteronomy 1:13 (KJV)
The idea that we are not of this world, doesn’t mean, we have no citizenship in this physical world.
To not be of this world is not to think and live a life controlled or subdued by the world’s ideologies, concepts, cultures and reasoning patterns.
“Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.” Romans 12:2 (TPT)
You are of God (1 John 4:4) and you don’t have to adjust to or fit into the ideals and culture around you without even thinking.
As a believer, your citizenship is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20), through the new birth in Christ. That is where you belong.
However, you also have citizenship in this physical world. Your spiritual identity doesn’t nullify the idea that you belong to a physical family, a tribe, a country, or a nation. God has planted you in the family you are or the tribe and nation just so that you will be the representation of His Kingdom.
Paul (the apostle of Jesus) knew he was of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19); yet, his Heavenly citizenship didn’t make him deny his Earthly citizenship.
Though in Philippians 3, Paul emphasized Christ’s preeminence above his physical and religious identity, he didn’t deny his physical citizenship.
“I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin…” Philippians 3:5 (NLT).
The believer in Christ has an automatic dual citizenship. You are both a citizen of Heaven by spiritual birth and a citizen of the country you were physically born into.
You have the right to exercise your citizenship at any given time.
Paul acknowledges that he is a citizen of heaven (Philippians 3:20) and doesn’t only boast of his citizenship as an Israelite (Philippians 3:5). He also exercised his Roman citizenship right when he was arrested and beaten.
“While the crowd was screaming and yelling, removing their outer garments, and throwing handfuls of dust in the air in protest, the commander had Paul brought back into the compound. He ordered that he be whipped with a lash and interrogated to find out what he said that so infuriated the crowd. When the soldiers stretched Paul out with ropes, he said to the captain, who was standing nearby, “Is it legal for you to torture a Roman citizen like this, without a proper trial?”
When the officer heard this, he immediately went to his commander and reported it, saying, “This man is a Roman citizen. What should we do now?” The commander came to Paul and asked him, “Tell me the truth, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes I am,” he replied. The commander said, “I had to purchase my citizenship with a great sum of money.” Paul replied, “I was born as a citizen!” Acts 22:23-28 (TPT)
Did you see that?
Don’t give up your citizenship rights just because you are a citizen of Heaven.
His Roman citizenship right spared him some additional time to preach the gospel.
“All of the soldiers who were about to whip Paul backed away, because they were afraid of the consequences for tying up and holding a Roman citizen against his will.” Acts 22:29 (TPT).
Why didn’t Paul say that he is not of this world, therefore they should do whatever they want to him?
Because he knew his rights and didn’t want to go through that punishment at that time, he exercised his rights as a Roman citizen.
For example, many believers with their genuine choice of who to vote for have been quiet and allowed ungodly men to make decisions for them. I am not saying whoever you are going to choose or vote for will be the savior of your country. But whoever you choose to lead must be someone who will help the country with policies which wouldn’t affect the kingdom’s agenda.
The decision to choose who to vote for should not be about religious affiliation or political affiliation but a decision based on the wisdom of God in your heart and personal conviction.
Since you are of the faith, your decision to exercise your citizenship right to vote is not carnality. Instead, such decisions and prayers will help the affairs of the country where you belong.
Those who are born of God must take a stand to help the countries they belong. The people of the Kingdom are the best people to appoint leaders for their countries.
Remain Peaceful in your decisions.
Selah.
