THE SUPPLY OF KNOWLEDGE – ABOUND IN THESE THINGS 4 (ABUNDANT FRUIT-BEARERS 17)
” But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ“ 2 Peter 2:5-8 (NKJV).
Now we have seen that, the word, “add” in the opening verses, is not in terms of mathematics. To “add” means to supply lavishly.
The Greek word is “epichorēgeō. The root verb is choregeo; it gives us our English word choreography which is defined as the sequence of steps and movements in dance. It is the arrangement of movements that the audience sees on the stage.
Beloved, all the needed sequence of steps and movements in a dance has been arranged, we just supply or demonstrate it on this great stage of life.
One of the sequence of the divine dance we are to lavishly supply to faith and virtue is knowledge.
THE SUPPLY OF KNOWLEDGE
In 2 Peter, the apostle used different words for knowledge. Though each of these words may have some similarity, they have their unique rich meanings.
Though he used the word, knowledge about five (5) or more times, he chose a specific word in the Greek.
See these:
2 Peter:
a. 1:2
“… through the knowledge (epignōsis) of God and of Jesus our Lord.”
b. 1:3
“… through our knowledge (epignōsis) of him….”
c. 1:5-6
“For this very reason, make every effort to add … to goodness, knowledge (gnōsis)…”
d. 1:8
“… keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge (epignōsis) of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
e. 1:12
“… even though you know (oida) them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.”
f. 1:14
“because I know (oida) that I will soon put [my body] aside….”
You will see that, the word knowledge, gnōsis, used in the opening verse (1 Peter 1:5-6, ) is different from the word knowledge, epignōsis, used in 1 Peter 1:8.
Few people have some subtle resentment towards the word “gnosis”, more because of the “Gnostic movement” (which considered material existence flawed or evil, and held the principal element of salvation to be direct knowledge of the hidden divinity, attained via mystical or esoteric insight. Many Gnostic texts deal not in concepts of sin and repentance, but with illusion and enlightenment.)
Peter, the apostle, in his epistle was speaking of knowledge, gnōsis, as , “experientially know”; functional (“working”) knowledge gleaned from first-hand (personal) experience, connecting theory to application; “application-knowledge,” gained in (by) a direct relationship. (Strong’s Bible dictionary)
This knowledge, gnosis, is the possession of information of what is known. Gnosis describes the comprehension or intellectual grasp of something. It refers to knowledge gained by experience. Gnosis is an “experiential knowledge”.
It speaks of an intellectual possession of scriptures, both by study of the Bible and scriptural experience through situations.
This is more of knowing God’s word and His ways.
God wants us to supply this knowledge to faith and virtue, so that we can mature and be productive fruit bearers.
Grasp the knowledge of the scriptures on daily basis. Knowledge is an indispensable element in your fruit bearing.
Apply the scriptures in every situation, and don’t assume there are situations, you don’t need the word of God.
Put God’s word to work in your daily life.
